In Train Simulator Classic, the Arlbergbahn (Southern Railway) is one of the most significant and scenic routes available, primarily brought to life by the Austrian developer RSSLO. This historic corridor connects Vienna to the Slovenian border, traversing the Austrian Alps and the legendary Semmering Pass.
📍 The Major Route Segments
Because the full Südbahn is over 260 km long, RSSLO has divided the line into three high-detail segments that can be enjoyed individually or merged.
- Wien Hbf – Payerbach-Reichenau: This 85 km northern section starts at Vienna’s ultra-modern main station. It covers the relatively flat run through Wiener Neustadt before reaching the foothills of the Alps. It prominently features the ÖBB 1116 (Taurus).
- Wiener Neustadt – Bruck an der Mur: The most famous 110 km segment. It includes the Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its 15 tunnels and 16 viaducts. This pack includes the ÖBB 4024 (Talent) and the BR 193 (Vectron).
- Bruck an der Mur – Maribor: A 130 km cross-border trek that takes you from the industrial hub of Bruck an der Mur, through Graz, and across into Slovenia. This add-on features the BR 1822 “Brennerlok” locomotive.
🚆 Rolling Stock & Technical Highlights
The Südbahn routes are a showcase for modern Austrian and Slovenian motive power, emphasizing heavy freight and high-speed passenger services.
- The Fleet: While each route comes with specific trains, you’ll frequently see the ÖBB 1016/1116 Taurus, the ÖBB 4744 Cityjet, and the distinctive Slovenian SŽ 363 (often nicknamed “Brigitte”).
- Authentic Signaling: These routes use highly accurate Austrian (ÖBB) and Slovenian (SŽ) signaling systems, including functional PZB and LZB safety systems for high-speed sections.
- The “Full” Experience: For those who want the ultimate challenge, the Südbahn Combine tool allows players who own the individual segments to merge them into a single, massive 235 km continuous route.
