📍 The Route: The Black Butte District
This stretch of the “I-5 Corridor” is famous for its extreme elevation changes and the constant presence of the 14,179-foot Mount Shasta volcano.
- The Climb: Heavy manifest freights must grind their way out of Dunsmuir (2,290 ft), following the Sacramento River Valley up to the 5,063-foot summit at Grass Lake.
- The Cantara Loop: Features a masterful recreation of the Cantara Loop, a famous double-horseshoe curve designed to help trains gain elevation on gradients exceeding 2.2%.
- Black Butte to Klamath Falls: After the summit, the route opens up into the volcanic lava fields and high plains of the Lower Klamath Basin as you head toward the yard in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
